Identify the axial contact and its limits

Cylindrical roller configurations differ in whether and how their flanges provide axial location.

Where axial loading is supported, the relevant contacts and lubrication conditions are not simply the same as the radial rolling-fatigue rating. JTEKT therefore provides a separate axial-load section for cylindrical roller bearings, and NSK distinguishes configurations with different locating functions. Read those requirements for the exact product before assigning axial capacity. A large radial rating cannot be copied into the axial column of a calculation, nor does the presence of flanges demonstrate unlimited thrust capability under every speed and lubrication condition.

Keep a radial and axial evidence trail for the same product

Record the full bearing type, radial and axial reactions, speed, lubrication method and any manufacturer's conditions governing axial load.

Identify the direction of the axial force and whether it is continuous or transient. If a proposal lists only radial C and C0 values, request the specific axial-load basis instead of estimating it as a percentage of radial capacity. Also check that the intended locating or floating function is unchanged. This creates a review in which the radial life calculation, axial operating conditions and shaft arrangement can be assessed together without allowing one favourable catalog rating to stand in for all three.
