Separate the bearing's angular response from shaft acceptance

Self-aligning bearings can be selected for applications involving shaft deflection or alignment difficulty.

That useful capability does not establish that an existing shaft with unexplained runout is acceptable. Shaft straightness, strength, dynamic behaviour and the surrounding interfaces remain separate requirements. The distinction is especially important after a machine incident: fitting an aligning bearing may change how the support responds without determining why the shaft is bent or whether the machine can operate correctly. Use the manufacturer's alignment information as evidence about the bearing, while assessing the shaft against the equipment's own condition and design requirements.

Keep deflection and damage evidence in separate records

Record when the runout or alignment issue was observed, the shaft condition during measurement, the measurement locations and the applicable drawing requirements.

Distinguish expected elastic deflection under a known load from permanent geometry measured after unloading. Compare that evidence with the exact bearing arrangement and the machine's acceptance criteria. Do not label a damaged shaft acceptable solely because a self-aligning product is available, and do not assume that every observed angular difference proves shaft damage. A traceable assessment explains which condition is present and which requirement governs it, rather than using the bearing type as a substitute for examining the shaft.
