Read the type before assigning the support function

NSK distinguishes cylindrical roller bearing configurations by their ring ribs or flanges.

Its general guidance identifies NU and N types among the free-end configurations, while other types can provide specified axial location or limited axial-load support. Those distinctions affect where relative axial movement is possible. Replacing one configuration with another that has the same envelope can therefore change the shaft arrangement. Confirm the full type, allowable displacement and relevant operating restrictions for the exact product. A description such as “cylindrical roller bearing, same size” leaves the support function unresolved even when the nominal radial capacity appears suitable.

Verify the displacement path on the actual assembly

Identify which ring is fitted to the shaft, which is retained in the housing, and where the bearing geometry permits relative axial motion.

Check the intended displacement in both directions, along with adjacent shoulders, covers and seals. If the equipment requires internal float, ask the supplier to confirm that capability for the proposed complete designation and drawing. Do not infer it from a generic cross-section or transfer it from another cylindrical roller type. The resulting record should distinguish the movement inside the bearing from movement at a ring seat, since the fit requirements and potential failure modes of those two solutions are different.
