Include the cage in the operating-envelope review

A cage guides and spaces the rolling elements, and its material can have operating restrictions different from those of the bearing rings.

JTEKT discusses synthetic-resin cages separately from metal cage materials and relates material choice to operating conditions. A bearing that matches the required envelope and basic type can therefore still represent a meaningful execution change if the cage differs. Do not apply a temperature capability quoted for a metal cage to an unspecified polymer cage, or assume all polymers share one limit. Identify the actual material and the manufacturer's relevant restrictions before evaluating the proposed duty or lubricant substitution.

Make the cage change visible on the substitution sheet

Record the old and proposed complete bearing designations, cage descriptions, relevant temperatures, lubricant and operating duty.

Ask whether the manufacturer's data covers the actual combination, including any conditions that limit the cage execution. If the supplier can identify only “plastic cage,” keep the exact material and suitability unresolved rather than assigning a generic polymer temperature limit. For an existing failure, preserve the observed cage condition as a separate finding; it is not proof by itself that the material choice caused the damage. This record links the selection question to identifiable product evidence while avoiding an unsupported claim that one cage material is universally better.
