Distinguish normal traces from a supported diagnosis

NSK explains that running traces can develop from normal rolling contact and illustrates how different conditions can change their pattern.

A visible trace is consequently not automatically damage, nor is an unusual pattern a complete measurement of shaft alignment. The bearing type, load directions and component orientation affect its interpretation. Seat and shaft geometry also need their own evidence. Describe what the trace shows, preserve the original orientation and compare it with the machine's known conditions before assigning a cause. This keeps a useful diagnostic clue from becoming an unsupported numerical or categorical conclusion about the surrounding assembly.

Connect the pattern with independently obtained geometry

Label the inner and outer rings, load direction if known, bearing position and viewing orientation in the photographs.

Retain shaft, housing and alignment measurements with their actual methods and conditions. If the proposed explanation is misalignment, identify which geometry or assembly evidence supports it and whether the trace is consistent with that condition. Do not reverse the logic and treat the photograph as a substitute for every missing measurement. Where the orientation or load history has been lost, report the limitation. The resulting comparison allows the bearing examination and the dimensional investigation to inform each other without pretending that either one alone settles the entire cause.
