Follow the axial direction of the contact geometry

In a tandem arrangement, the angular contact bearings are oriented to work in the same axial direction.

This can serve a different purpose from an opposed arrangement that provides axial support in both directions. The presence of two bearings therefore does not answer the question “is the shaft located both ways?” NSK's arrangement guidance distinguishes these configurations and their load-carrying characteristics. The rest of the shaft support must supply any required opposite-direction location. Do not assume that a tandem set is interchangeable with a back-to-back or face-to-face pair simply because the individual bearings have matching nominal dimensions.

Check the machine's reverse-load case explicitly

List axial forces for normal operation, start-up, shutdown and any process reversal.

Mark which support reacts each direction. If a tandem pair is proposed, identify the separate bearing position or arrangement that provides the required opposite reaction. Also confirm the manufacturer's set and load-sharing requirements; two nominally similar individual bearings do not automatically form an approved tandem set. The useful drawing shows both axial load paths, not merely two bearing symbols beside one another. If one load direction has no established path, keep that gap visible instead of treating the tandem pair's higher directional capacity as proof that the whole arrangement is complete.
