The axial mounting position affects the radial fit

A bearing driven onto a taper changes its fit as its axial position advances.

That makes the mounting condition different from simply checking the nominal diameter of a cylindrical seat. Depending on the bearing and method, the manufacturer may specify drive-up, clearance reduction or another controlled quantity for installation. Those requirements must be obtained for the exact bearing, taper and sleeve arrangement. The nominal bore designation identifies a product or interface, but does not tell the technician where to stop the mounting operation. Treat the applicable setting method as part of the job specification rather than an optional check after the bearing is already installed.

Prepare the control information before starting the job

Record the full bearing designation, shaft or sleeve identification, taper information and the manufacturer's mounting procedure.

Identify the initial condition and each specified measurement, including its method and reference location. If clearance reduction is the control, retain the relevant starting and resulting readings under the stated conditions; if drive-up is specified, retain the defined movement reference. Do not substitute an arbitrary nut angle, torque or travel copied from a different assembly. A useful job packet explains both what will be measured and which exact document makes that result acceptable. Missing control information should remain a visible planning gap rather than becoming an invented installation value.
